not quite ready for a pet

today when i was picking lala up from her dance class, she found a roly poly in the bark chips outside the dance studio. she was thrilled beyond belief. she first showed miss heidi and then she showed me. after which, she began to shake it violently in between her cupped hands while saying, "look i'm shaking it up!"

miss heidi said, "you're going to give him a headache!"

and i replied, "whoa, be careful! you're going to make him sick and then you'll have roly poly throw up all over your hands!"

that thought made her face cringe, and she quickly stopped that "fun" activity. it was a classic look, oh how i wish i had my camera at that moment trained on her face!

on our way home, ever so cautiously, she carried it in her cupped hands making sure not to squish it. once at home, she caringly got a jar, put some dirt and grass and leaves in it to make it comfortable for her new roly poly "pet".

rolypoly

well, tonight after dinner i mentioned that we would need to let him go tomorrow because we didn't have the right kind of food to feed him and he could die if she kept inside the jar. this did not make her happy! she said, "but i want him for my pet!"

to which i said, "i know you do, but if we keep him he could die."

and it was in this moment, aside from the violent shaking earlier in the day, that i knew she was not yet ready for a pet when she said, "i want him for my pet! i don't care if he dies! "

it's a good thing we started out small!

That's hilarious! I especially like the bit about roly poly vomit :)
The story does kinda bring back thoughts of "Of Mice and Men" though!

That was a hilarious little quote. I guess she was willing to love her pet to death, huh?

Maybe she has started a new craze--Poly Pockets.

And yes, good thing you started out small. Cute story.

kids and little creatures are so funny. velzy loves to catch baby geckos and has killed a few cause she loves on them too much, and it makes me feel so bad!

oh, and i love that you have tom waits on your playlist, so good.

Funny story! Glad it survived the shaking incident. Starting out small is very, very good. Pet's are work, but our kitty had been so easy for the most part, except for when she puked all over Rylie's leg in the van. That sucked:0)

HAHA! Thats great! I was ready for him to be dead already from the shaking... And I thought she must have shaken him REALLY hard beacuse I think I remember shaking rolly pollies when I was little but never remember them dying.... Now that I think about it that was kinda mean of me, I'm sure they dont like it! Ooops!

Yeah, good call. Probably not quite ready for a "real" pet. That is very funny though.

Yeah, pets are so much work, well you know, you've seen our dog and the headaches she causes.

That's so funny. She has a love/hate relationship with those little critters!

Oh, and congrats on winning the contest! That is so exciting! The picture is adorable, and I'm glad Alexis was in a small part of it! :-)

I haven't seen one of those bugs for years. No wonder she wanted to keep it, those are so cool!

Hey new template! Looks nice, very fall-ie. Gotta be honest tho, I think I liked the other one bettah. ;) They both look nice.

Did you guys adopt the frog from last night? Perhaps you can feed him the rollei-polie...

Very fun and I am glad I was there to witness the funny reaction. I just love Lala and I'm going to miss having her in dance and in Primary especially since she can always make me laugh like last week when she wanted to pick me out of the magical tree! I had a good laugh right there in class and she felt very clever. I am going to miss those little things about her.
