fun with a glow stick and a slow shutter

both nani and lala got a glow stick at nani's skate party. that night when we tucked them in to bed, of course, they had to sleep with their glow sticks. they asked if we could take pictures of them playing with the sticks in the dark. after much maneuvering and manipulating the camera on manual, i finally figured out how to get the effect they were after:

rectangle and star

nani is doing a star with the blue one, while lala is doing a rectangle with the green.

lines and squiggles

in this one nani is walking back and forth as she walks closer to the camera, while lala does her own little design.

when they were satisfied, i tucked them back into bed and went downstairs. mitch asked what i was doing up there with the camera. i told him. then he said, "i want to do it, too!"

so, i got the camera back out and we both headed back up to the girls room. of course, they were thrilled to be able to get out of bed for a second time after being tucked in. this was what mitch had in mind:

nani lala

mason

who ever knew you could have so much fun with a glow stick and a camera!?

That does look very cool. I can only imagine how fun it would be to also get approval from mom and dad to stay up later. :)

Cool pictures! My kids would love to do that - not only get out of bed and play with mom and dad but to have such cool pictures of it. You're a great photographer - you must have a much nicer camera than mine!

That is SO cool. I need the deets, as in DETAILS. Is it hard? Did you have to write backwards? Settings?

Great memories for the kids!

Just been catching up on your blog...
As always, your children are darling and I love the new haircut on your daughter and the I 'yuve' you from the baby. I can't wait until Faith says that to me. These are the days... I know they are.

That is so awesome! Who knew that glow-stick-man-ship, as Malia put it, could be so high-tech!

it was actually MY "glowstickmanship". mitch tried and it didn't work so well, his writting is , umm, less ledgible with a glowstick!

pineapple princess:

it was not hard. put camera on manual-put it on a super slow shutter speed (one that stays open for more than 5 seconds)-hand held very steady (i rested camera on my knees) or on a tripod (even better, mine needs a new part so didn't use it)-the writer needs to be facing away from the camera to write or if they are super talented they can face the camera and write backwards (we weren't talented that way)-write really slow so you finish the word just as the shutter closes-hold the glow stick so that only the end/tip shows. now go get a glowstick and try it!!
