and the winner is... darilyn

okay, so there wasn't a competition. there wasn't even a contest. and, unfortunately for darilyn, there is no reward, except maybe the joy of knowing that she correctly diagnosed nani's rash!

on friday morning at around 10:30, i got a call from the school saying that they had nani in the health room. apparently, she had fallen asleep in class and just looked really worn out! so, the baby and i jumped into the car to bring nani home! she pretty much slept the whole day, waking only once to go to the bathroom.

saturday, she wasn't quite as tired, but halfway through the day she came down with a rash all over her body, but no fever. mitch and i were trying to figure out what it could be. was it chicken pox?

sunday, she seemed better, but the rash hadn't gone away. it hadn't blistered either, so we figured it wasn't chicken pox! phew! but talking with my dad he said it could be the measles!

this morning she woke up with the rash, plus a cough, but still no fever.

we got an appointment in the afternoon with the doctor. sure enough, just like darilyn said at church on sunday, she has strep throat with a scarlatina rash. it's basically a fancy way of saying scarlet fever. so, now she is on antibiotics for the next ten days and will be able to return to school this wednesday! i know she is feeling better already because she was teasing her sister a lot today! that's always a good indication that a child is on the mend, isn't it?!

the bad news.... it is highly contagious. the doctor said that in a family of four, two or three will get it. now, we are watching the two other girls closely to see if they come down with it and hoping that it stops with nani!

good job and thank you, doctor darilyn!

Yay for me, sad for you. strep throat doesn't always manifest itself with a rash but it can. I'm glad you took her in because as you said, it is very contagious. Here's to hoping that the rest of you don't get it! Call if you need anything during the day. I can run to the store for you or take Lala to preschool if you need some help.

Scarlet fever? whodda thought? Glad she is on the mend. I hope you guys don't all get it! Especially with our great weather we have coming up at the end of the week.

If they're all better and Kawena can go to Elizabeth's, you should come biking with us Thurs morning.

Ya, me too--I didn't think that stuff was still around.

Funny that you know your kids are feeling better when they start teasing their siblings!

You gonna be getting a bill soon for the diagnosis?

I had scarlett fever as a child! Crazy! You don't hear about that one very often. . .

Ooooh. I hope she is feeling better soon.

The first time I got strep I got that horrible rash too. The "good" news is since then I've never gotten the rash when I've gotten strep throat.

I hope everyone else can miraculously be spared.

Yikes! Darilyn is awesome for knowing such things! I too thought scarlet fever was a thing of the past.Totally off the subject.....Scarlett is my new favorite girl name, though there are no more babies in the plan for our family. Just thought I would share:0) Get better Nani!

So happy Nani's better. When I had Scarletina, it was a piece a cake. I got to stay home from work and so I made a dress with all the extra time and energy.

I hope that no one else gets it. There is nothing worse than sick kids. Although, there are times when it is nice because they want to cuddle!

Scarlet fever just sounds scary to me, but I guess we are lucky to live during times when medicine and antibiotics are readily available. Maybe you could all wear those doctor face masks around your house, to keep from getting it--what a picture that would be.

Yuck! So sorry! I hope Nani is the only one and is back to normal soon. It's no fun to watch your little ones get sick!
P.S. Thanks for the "playlist"! An old Depeche Mode song was playing and a whoosh of memories came back!!

I had scarlet fever as a baby...I remember my mom showing me how pink I'd gotten using my 1st grade reading book (it was a bright fushia/pink color) as an example. I hope your family doesn't get it too...or Nani's class for that matter! No doubt she exposed a couple of kids before snoozing in class. :)

As a side note...my kids ALWAYS break out in a rash with strep. I can diagnose strep in my kids better than the doctor...they are classic cases of rash, headache at the base of the neck and a sore throat!

Stay healthy!

Eeek! I'm glad they figured out what was wrong with Nani, but I'm sorry that she is/was so contagious. I too hope it all stops with Nani and the other girls don't get it too.

Oh, I'm so sorry! My hubby's family had it when they were all little and yes, they all got it at the same time-it wasn't fun but this too shall pass. Call in some favors!
